There are rumors that the instructor was a known d-bag and the student was intentionally putting him through hell. Also, yelling is a viable alternative to communicating in the cockpit in the event of an intercom failure.

Very true. Although from my experience working with foreign flight students, they tend to be more fluent with the cuss words that with the rest of their grammar.
